The odds of you losing a million dollars in the first month of gambling addiction are close to zero.
Yet the issue is so complex, experts believe there is no simple solution.
“Gambling addiction is not a problem to be addressed in one fell swoop.
It is a complex and nuanced issue that involves both the individual and the broader society,” said Dr Richard Biddle, a psychiatrist at the University of Queensland.
“It can be managed effectively through individual counselling, support services and educational programs.
But there is an awful lot of work to be done.”
There is no single answer, but there are many ways to get off the gambling hook.
“But I don’t think it is a one-size-fits-all, because it is so varied and the individual’s experiences are varied.””
There is a lot of individual variation,” said Gary McNeil, a professor of clinical psychology at University of Sydney.
“But I don’t think it is a one-size-fits-all, because it is so varied and the individual’s experiences are varied.”
What is gambling addiction ?
Gambling can be seen as a form of addictive behaviour where the goal is to win a reward and keep the reward, or for the person who engages in it to increase their self-worth and/or their social standing.
Gambling is associated with a variety of negative outcomes, including crime and unemployment, as well as physical health problems.
Dr McNeil said the most important factors for individuals to consider in deciding if they have gambling addiction were their own experiences, the level of involvement of others in their gambling, and the quality of support available.
“If you are experiencing an event, like going on a long night of gambling, you may feel overwhelmed and it can feel like you can’t control it,” he said.
“If you feel you have no control of your behaviour, you are probably more likely to get hooked on gambling and start engaging in it.”
The problem with people who have gambling problems is that it is very difficult to know how to treat or even control.
“Gaining support for gambling addiction: what you need to know 1:00 What is gambling?
Gambling, like any other addictive behaviour, can lead to negative outcomes.
They are different in their own way, but they can have the same symptoms and that can be a cause for concern.””
We know from the work of psychologists that it can be really difficult to tell someone with gambling problems from someone who has a mental health problem,” Dr McNeil explained.
“They are different in their own way, but they can have the same symptoms and that can be a cause for concern.”
Gains in mental health support and recovery help are critical.
“One of the things that we see in people with gambling issues is that the more help they get, the more they are able to control themselves,” Dr Biddle said.
“The more they can control themselves, the better.”
How to avoid or manage gambling addictionGambling addicts need to understand the risks involved in engaging in a behaviour that could put them at risk of serious harm.
“Many people who engage in gambling use gambling because they don “get away with it”, or because they are in denial that it’s something they want to do,” Dr Jai said.
For those who are struggling with gambling addiction or don’t want to change, there are a number of things that you can do to reduce the risk of becoming addicted to gambling.
1:15 “If a gambling addict is getting in touch with their problem, it is critical that they recognise that it isn’t their fault, and that there are ways they can help themselves and their partner, including:• Talking to a trusted partner about what they want in their life, such as jobs, relationships or hobbies• Making a commitment to stop gambling once they are confident they can get away with what they are doing• Setting goals for themselves to help them manage their gambling• Taking the time to explore their life and develop a plan to make a positive change in their lifestyle.• Having a support network around them to talk about their experiences.
“For example, if someone says they have had an alcohol problem, there is not much that they can do, other than to blame it on someone else, which is not the solution.””
A person can be so overwhelmed by the problem that they think they are not going to change and may not even realise it is their problem,” Mr Jai explained.
