Gambling sites are increasingly popular with people looking for a safe and inexpensive way to spend money online, but the risks of gambling addiction can be real, a new study finds.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported last month that gambling addiction has become the leading cause of death among people over age 60.
The number of Americans with gambling-related problems rose by more than 30 percent in the past decade.
Gambling addiction can cause a host of health problems including high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, depression, diabetes and arthritis, according to the CDC.
The study, published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that among people with gambling problems, gambling sites can often be an effective way to get around the problems and keep money from being stolen.
Gambling addiction is a complex disorder that includes gambling addiction and gambling addiction in general.
Some people who are addicted to gambling also have gambling problems that are more severe, according the CDC, but those disorders can overlap.
The condition is defined by the need for repeated gambling, such as using slot machines, to keep a person from losing their money.
The new study looked at the gambling habits of more than 13,000 adults and children from the U.S. and Canada.
The survey included questions on gambling habits, gambling addiction, gambling websites, and gambling sites, according of the CDC website.
Groups like The Internet Society, the National Center for State Courts, the Association of Casino Control Boards, and the National Association of Gaming Commissioners all supported the study, which was funded by the National Institute of Health.
“Our research shows that people with chronic gambling problems are more likely to engage in illegal online gaming than people without gambling problems,” said Dr. James R. Paltrow, chair of the department of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University.
“If people with addiction problems are using gambling sites to avoid the financial consequences of their gambling problems or to pay off gambling debts, this could have a serious impact on their lives.”
Gambling sites can be used for a wide range of activities, from games of chance to gambling that involves money, the CDC said.
The CDC said that people who have gambling addiction may be able to use these sites to gamble without breaking the law.
Gifting, for example, can be a way to help avoid paying back gambling debts.
People who gamble with others can sometimes use these gambling sites for this purpose, according Paltrows.
The CDC also noted that some sites, such the popular online gambling sites PokerStars and GamblingStars, are a form of gambling that can be risky for people with other gambling problems.
“Online gambling is an important form of entertainment for many people, including those with gambling addiction,” Paltrees said.
“The potential for illegal activity is significant, and we want to ensure that those who are using online gambling responsibly and safely are protected from illegal activity.”
Paltrow added that the new study found that people over 65 with gambling addictions were also at increased risk of gambling problems and death.
“The vast majority of people over the age of 65 have some degree of gambling-based addiction and are unlikely to be able and willing to change their behavior,” Peltrow said.
